He's also been walking a tightrope in his own life, conducting a sometimes turbulent romance with Rita (Ann Dvorak), a saloon singer and co-owner, while also not discouraging the attentions of Sherry Balder (Rhonda Fleming), the "nice girl" daughter of one of the town's leading businessmen, who would love to marry Dan if only he would settle down.A new wave of homesteaders is arriving, and the cattlemen, cowboys, and saloon owners want them driven out and the town kept wide open, fearing the homesteaders' religious beliefs and the arrival of families, which means schools, building, and encroaching "respectability."Trouble breaks out and people are killed, with Dan caught in the middle. Using his guile and a good deal of bravery, and the unwitting help from the cowardly county sheriff (Edgar Buchanan), Dan manages to get the shop owners onto the side of the homesteaders, and plays a dangerous game of divide-and-conquer with the saloon-keepers and cowboys.A lot of destruction ensues and a seeming bloodbath is in the offing until Dan's plan takes hold, and the cowboys and saloon-keepers wipe each other out in a night of burning and killing. In the course of his trying to stay alive, Dan is able to finally decide whether he belongs more with Fleming or Dvorak, and, astonishingly for a Western of this era, chooses the latter." http://oldtimeentertainment.com/images/uploads/scott7.jpg 12.99 http://oldtimeentertainment.com/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=58 AN OCCURANCE AT OWL CREEK BRIDGE "A man stood upon a railroad bridge in northern Alabama, looking down into the swift water twenty feet below. The man's hands were behind his back, the wrists bound with a cord. A rope closely encircled his neck. It was attached to a stout cross-timber above his head and the slack feel to the level of his knees. Some loose boards laid upon the ties supporting the rails of the railway supplied a footing for him and his executioners -- two private soldiers of the Federal army, directed by a sergeant who in civil life may have been a deputy sheriff. At a short remove upon the same temporary platform was an officer in the uniform of his rank, armed. He was a captain. A sentinel at each end of the bridge stood with his rifle in the position known as "support," that is to say, vertical in front of the left shoulder, the hammer resting on the forearm thrown straight across the chest -- a formal and unnatural position, enforcing an erect carriage of the body. It did not appear to be the duty of these two men to know what was occurring at the center of the bridge; they merely blockaded the two ends of the foot planking that traversed it.This movie will leave you with chills ..........." http://oldtimeentertainment.com/images/uploads/owl-creek-gallery.jpg 13.99 http://oldtimeentertainment.com/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=20 ANIMAL KINGDOM "Tom Collier (Leslie Howard) is a wealthy publisher who has had a great relationship with Daisy(Ann Harding), but when he decides to marry, it is not Daisy who he asks, it is Cecilia(Myrna Loy) a prominent socialite.Cecilia is a callous libertine, while Daisy is the soul of love and fidelity. After the marriage, Tom is bored with the social scene and the obligations of his life. The director's secretary asks the train's engineer, an old boyfriend, for help. As the engineer ponders what to do, a stranger in the train station tells him that he has a baby that could be used. On board the train, the actress meets a young doctor whom she knew in school, and whom she is still in love with. The presence of the baby causes a series of misunderstandings between them, but the real problems begin when the engineer begins to suspect that the baby may have been kidnapped. The Broadway Limited is much funnier, and more consistently funny, than many better-known screwball comedies of the period. Its plot builds on several interlaced misunderstandings. A movie star (Marjorie Woodworth) is pressured by her scheming, tyrannical Hollywood producer (Leonid Kinskey) to pretend to adopt a baby for publicity purposes. The producer's assistant (Patsy Kelly) turns to an ex-boyfriend, a railroad engineer (Victor McLaglen), to borrow a baby for the stunt, but the baby he gets may have been kidnapped and the subject of a widespread police hunt. The movie star runs into her ex-boyfriend (Dennis O'Keefe), who thinks the baby really is hers. And the baby keeps disappearing and reappearing on a cross-country train trip.As in many comedies, the romantic lead roles are blander and less interesting those written for the character actors, who get all the best lines. Top-billed Victor McLaglen has a substantial role -- watch his underplayed reaction to the bratty kid who asks him, "Is that your real face?" But so does Leonid Kinskey, who has a ball and one of his biggest parts ever as the manipulative producer. Down-to-earth Patsy Kelly replaced dithering Zazu Pitts as Thelma Todd's partner in two-reel comedies, but this is the only film in which they appeared together. That's a shame, as they make a superb team, particularly when they share a bed with the baby (and a leaky hot-water bottle) between them. Hedy as a closeted nymphomaniac, really shined in this movie. The close up of her face as she is attempting suicide in her car at the near beginning of the movie is a sight to behold. Her costars Dennis O' Keefe and her husband at the time, John Loder, the suave art dealer gave ample support. There is even the 'witch' from the wizard of oz, as a friendly, but nosey landlady. In the Dishonored Lady, Madeleine Damien (Hedy Lamarr) is a successful magazine editor with a free-spirited private life, but a number of failed relationships and years of burning the candle at both ends have taken their toll and Madeleine is suicidal and on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Her psychiatrist, Dr. Caieb (Morris Carnovsky), advises her to find a less stressful and more personally satisfying line of work, so Madeleine leaves the publishing industry and moves to a flat in Greenwich Village, where she pursues a long-standing dream of becoming an artist.Madeleine falls in love with a scientist living in her building, Dr. David Cousins (Dennis O'Keefe), and they plan to marry. However, shortly before they are to wed, David is called out of town and Madeleine decides to visit a nightclub, where she runs into Felix Courtland (John Loder), a jeweler with whom she once had an affair. Felix invites Madeleine back to his apartment, but before long she begins to think better of it and tries to slip out the back before he gets the wrong idea, however, at the same time Jack Garet (William Lundigan), a former employee of Felix, arrives at the front door.Jack stole some jewels from Felix but begs him not to turn him in to the police; a fight breaks out, and Jack kills Felix. Since Madeleine was the last person to be seen with Felix, she is accused of murdering him, and David, not knowing of her stormy personal life before he met her, refuses to have anything to do with her.Hedy Lamarr and John Loder were married when they made this film, though perhaps appropriately given their contentious relationship in Dishonored Lady, they divorced before the year was out !!Credited cast: Hedy Lamarr.... A bit perplexed at this news, Vicky shares the astrologer's report with William; however, he's so appalled that she would waste her time on pseudo-scientific hooey like astrology that he storms out of the house, moving into his observatory for a few days.On the predicted day, Vicky is wondering what happened to her dream man when an air raid warden, Lloyd Hunter (James Craig), shows up to confront Vicky and ends up going inside her house and shutting off her lights. Vicky and Lloyd strike up a conversation, and she begins to realize that he could well be the man the astrologer predicted she would meet; Vicky is interested in him, but just as he's leaving,William returns. William, however, senses that Vicky is infatuated with Lloyd, and he quickly hatches a devious plan to win back her good graces. When this was made, MGM was no longer making a serious effort to get Hedy Lamarr good roles. Though while the story isn't all that brilliant, Hedy's infinite loveliness and a few lightly amusing parts make this movie worthwhile. She's just impossibly gorgeous and a very warm presence throughout. And such a charming voice she had! Her and William Powell made a pretty good on-screen couple in this their second and final film together. He supplied most of the humor while she supplied all of the heavenliness. Sweet, sugary, sticky worship. You're going to have a steady diet of it till you're ready to scream -- you Billy goat!"Bette Davis as Joyce Arden in It's Love I'm AfterWith Annette Bening's recent triumph as a stage diva fighting to keep career, husband and lover in Being Julia (2004), the time is ripe for a remake of this sparkling, stage-centered screwball comedy from 1937. It even doubles the comic impact of Bening's film with not one but two divas battling for center stage and romance. It's Love I'm After was initiated by Leslie Howard, who after heavy dramatic roles in The Petrified Forest (1936), Romeo and Juliet (1936) and most of his other films, demanded a comic change of pace for his next picture at Warner Bros. Despite some misgivings at the executive level about Howard's ability to play comedy, producer Hal Wallis reluctantly accepted Howard's suggestion that he film the story "Gentleman After Midnight," all about a matinee idol who takes time from romantic sparring with his leading lady to try to cure a young female fan of her mindless devotion to him. Casey Robinson fashioned a witty screenplay that gave Howard the chance to drop comic zingers, swashbuckle through the grounds of a posh Pasadena mansion and spoof his Romeo and Juliet when he and his leading lady perform the play's final scene while whispering insults to each other.Finding the right leading lady was a major problem, however. Howard wanted a skilled comic actress from the stage, pushing for either Gertrude Lawrence or Ina Claire. Neither had a particularly large film following but Wallis arranged for director Archie Mayo to meet with Lawrence to discuss the role. She was interested and Mayo thought she could do it, but Wallis refused to commit to her, testing several other actresses with Howard. Then he and Howard saw Lawrence in the British film Men Are Not Gods (1936), and both had to admit she didn't photograph well. With a start date already set, the picture went into production without a leading lady. Finally, Wallis decided that Bette Davis could use a change of pace after intensely dramatic roles in Marked Woman, Kid Galahad and That Certain Woman (all 1937). She had her misgivings, though. Having churned out those films with little break, she was aching for a vacation. She also complained that the script favored Howard's role while the more interesting female role was the foolish society girl in love with him, being played by Olivia de Havilland. Moreover, she hated to cede sole above-the-title billing to Howard. Finally, Wallis convinced her the change of pace and the chance to make her third film with Howard (they had teamed for Of Human Bondage in 1934 and The Petrified Forest) would add to her prestige. One concession he would make later was agreeing to replace cinematographer James Van Trees with Tony Gaudio, one of the few cameramen Davis trusted to photograph her under her exacting standards.Another of Davis's concerns was her rocky relationship with Howard off-screen. While filming Of Human Bondage, he had been cold and dismissive, resenting an American actress being cast in what he considered a very British story. Her dramatic triumph in the film had won his respect, but he had run hot and cold while filming The Petrified Forest, sometimes ignoring her, sometimes coming on to her rather crudely. The latter was hardly a problem on It's Love I'm After. Instead, he turned his attentions to de Havilland, driving her mad with his dogged persistence.On-screen, however, the comic types meshed perfectly. Critics not only praised Howard and Davis for playing against type, but hailed the film's strong supporting cast, filled with eccentric comic actors -- including the ultimate gentleman's gentleman Eric Blore, blustering father George Barbier, and dizzy society matron Spring Byington. Any doubts about Howard's comic abilities were silenced by the film's impressive box office performance, bringing in over a million dollars during its initial release, and Howard's next hit, directing himself in George Bernard Shaw's classic comedy Pygmalion (1938).Producer: Hal B. He's in competition with Alan Dinehart who calls himself a "genealogist" and has just about the same set of ethics Cagney has. The only difference is Cagney lacks the polish of Dinehart and is less a hypocrite. Now no one ever confused James Cagney with Ronald Colman on the screen and I daresay they probably were never up for the same parts, but Cagney dumbs it down to Leo Gorcey levels in order to contrast himself with Dinehart. It's effective though. What makes this film special is that the leading lady is Bette Davis who was a year away from finally getting Jack Warner to give her a role with substance in Of Human Bondage. Speaking of class, you can see that Ms. Davis has it in abundance and that she wasn't going to be held down with supportive leading lady roles. Later on Cagney and Davis were given The Bride Came COD when both were big box office names.Cagney is quite the operator here and I won't tell you exactly what he does, he does bend our legal system over backwards though. Lying Lips also presents us with the acting skills of one Edna Mae Harris. Her singing is not bad, but when she’s forced to act, her line delivery is so hilariously bad I was falling off the floor laughing. Even worse is the dialogue. For some odd reason, the director made the cops as stupid as possible. Check the interrogation scene. EVERYTHING is repeated twice, and sometimes three times! “I answered the phone” “You answered the phone?” “I Answered The Phone” “I went back to the phone!” “So you went back to the phone?” “I went back to the phone!” Also the police are very smart: Witness: “She was my cousin!” Police Chief: “Oh she was your cousin! So you were related!” People have made comments about Earl Jones’ performance. I thought he was so perfect, just barking out his lines to the point of hilarity! Much, much more to be found in this film: Edna Mae taking a bath apparently with her heels on, her poor attempts at screaming and fainting, her reaction when someone answers the phone, her schizophrenic bath habits, the laughable continuity, the laughable editing, clubs that have wooden doors and no signage, and a white police chief who say he’s glad a black policeman is helping to solve who killed a black woman because “being a colored man, he might find things our other officers could not!” This movie is hilariously funny!Credited cast: Edna Mae Harris.... Selznick's "Gone With the Wind," it's no wonder that "Made for Each Other" is so often overlooked. But by the measure of any other year, this is a charmer and an unsung classic. It's a pretty familiar melodramatic scenario, with Stewart and Carole Lombard who struggle with all the usual obstacles that hit young marrieds -- illness, money troubles, interfering in-laws, etc -- but somehow manage to overcome. It's not the tearjerker it once was -- the emotions are too obvious today -- but the stars are wonderful and the script by Jo Swerling still quite crisp. The video and audio are first rate and far superior to other copies that I have seen, finally doing justice to the stars and the famous name of producer Selznick.Cast: Carole Lombard.... Dick Powell stars as Phillip Marlowe, the hard-boiled private detective antihero created by novelist Raymond Chandler. Hired by hulking, psychotic Moose Malloy (Mike Mazurki) to locate Moose's old girl friend, Marlowe is pitched headlong into a morass of intrigue and deception. The participants include duplicitous glamour-girl Claire Trevor, sodden slattern Esther Howard, suave blackmailer Otto Kruger and dyspeptic doctor Ralf Harolde. At one point, Marlowe is railroaded into a lunatic asylum, where under the influence of drugs he experiences a surrealistic nightmare the like of which would not be seen on screen again until Hitchcock's Vertigo (1958). So fascinating are the "bad" characters in Murder My Sweet that the 100% "good" characters, heroine Anne Shirley and detective Don Douglas, seem wishy-washy wimps by comparison. After years of insipid golly-gee roles, Dick Powell startled his fans with his cynical, world-weary portrayal of Philip Marlowe. This part put him back on top of the box-office tallies and enabled him to extend his acting career into the 1950s, which led to an even more lucrative "third life" as a powerful TV-studio executive." http://oldtimeentertainment.com/images/uploads/murder-gallery.jpg 16.99 http://oldtimeentertainment.com/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=67 "MY BLUE HEAVEN 1950 Betty Grable, Dan Dailey" "In this musical comedy with dramatic touches , Jack and Molly Moran(Dan Dailey and Betty Grable) are a show business couple who, after hosting their own radio show, have just been given a deal to star in a TV series. They're also thrilled to discover that Molly is expecting a baby, but their joy turns to sorrow after she loses the child in an auto accident, and her doctors tell her that she may not be able to conceive again. When they see how happy their friends Walter and Janet Pringle(David Wayne and Jane Wyatt) are with their five children, the morans decide to adopt, but they discover that show people are not generally regarded as fit parents, regardless of their success or stability. However good fortune eventually shines on Jack and Molly, as they find themselves with not one but two adopted tykes, and a big surprise around the corner. This film was nominated for WGA Award(Best Written Musical) in 1951.My Blue Heaven marked the film debut of musical star Mitzi Gaynortesturl = new Array(3);testurl[1]=""C:/DOCUME~1/ADMINI~1/LOCALS~1/Temp/~K2025d.jpg""testurl[2]=""C:/DOCUME~1/ADMINI~1/LOCALS~1/Temp/~K2025e.jpg""testurl[3]=""C:/DOCUME~1/ADMINI~1/LOCALS~1/Temp/~K2025f.jpg""function showupdate(photoIndex, photoDisplayType){document['Image0'].PathOrURL = testurl[photoIndex];}showupdate(1,0);Click on a picture to enlarge" http://oldtimeentertainment.com/images/uploads/blue_heaven.jpg 14.99 http://oldtimeentertainment.com/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=6 NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD 1968 Duane Jones and Judith O'Dea "Over the history of the horror cinema, there have been films that define and redefine the genre. After all, what could be more horrifying than the notion of reanimated human corpses feasting upon the living ?Utilizing a single claustrophobic setting for most of running time, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD tells the story of a group of strangers that are trapped inside an isolated farmhouse, as it is besieged by flesh eating zombies from a nearby cemetery.Made in black and white, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD has a documentary like quality that gives it a horrifying sense of realism akin to Orson Welles’ infamous WAR OF THE WORLDS broadcast.Although tame in comparison to the movies that followed it, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD does offer up some grisly images of zombies devouring human flesh, which I still find more unsettling that the more graphic depictions of later films. Dr. Bill Cortner (Jason Evers, here billed as Herb Evers) performs medical experiments despite the trepidation of his surgeon father (Bruce Brighton); transplantation is Bill's main area of interest, but he's also had some success using electric shock to restore life to the recently deceased. When Bill causes a car crash that decapitates his fiancée, Jan Compton (Virginia Leith), he spirits her head off to his secret laboratory and keeps it alive with the help of an experimental new serum. Soon, the doctor begins scouring the dives, strip clubs, and suburban streets for an attractive woman whose body he can steal to restore his lady love to her full, ambulatory glory. Meanwhile, back at the lab, Jan grows to hate Bill for refusing to let her die. Developing telepathic powers that allow her to communicate with one of Bill's failed experiments — a snarling creature kept locked up under the stairs — she begins to plot her revenge. Things come to a head when Bill returns to the lab with his intended victim: a bitter, disfigured, man-hating figure model (Adele Lamont). The promotional tagline for The Brain That Wouldn't Die was "Alive...without a body...fed by an unspeakable horror from hell!" The film helped provide the inspiration for '80s horror/comedy director Frank Henenlotter's Frankenhooker and Basket Case 2. The former includes a decapitated woman restored to life by her lover, while the latter features both a cameo from Brain star Jason Evers and another character who looks like the twin brother of the monster under the stairs. The film begins with young Buster appearing in his parents' circus acrobatic act (the real Keatons never appeared in a circus, but were vaudevillians instead). After Buster’s dad dies (an event that actually occurred when Keaton was in his 30s and already a star), the boy strikes out on his own. He makes it into silent films as a top slapstick comic, but his private life is complicated by two loves, a "sweet" girl (Blyth) and a prima Donna silent movie star (Fleming)--Buster was married three times, but not to either one of the ladies depicted in this film). When talkies come in, Buster is browbeaten by autocratic director Lorre (allof Keaton's talkies were directed by Eddie Sedgwick, one of his best friends) and finds himself unable to handle dialogue (no comment). He turns to drink (true) and destroys himself in Hollywood (partly true). But through the love of good girlBlyth , Buster makes a comeback in vaudeville, and finally decides to get married and settle down for the first time in his life (Buster did tour in vaudeville with wife Eleanor Norris, who was wife number three and whom he met nine years after the advent of talkies). The nicest thing about the film was that the amount Paramount paid Keaton for permission to film his "life story" ($50,000) which was large enough for Buster to remain financially solvent for the rest of his life. Despite the inaccuracies the movie is well done and it’s a joy to watch O’Connor recreate some of Buster’s best material--a TOUGH one to find and a MUST HAVE for Donald O’Connor fans, so grab it NOW for your video collection while it's available." http://oldtimeentertainment.com/images/uploads/buster_2.gif 15.99 http://oldtimeentertainment.com/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=14 "THE EVIL MIND 1934 Claude Rains, Fay Wray, Mary Clare, Jane Baxter" "The Evil MindClaude Rains is a phony psychic who makes a good living fleecing the suckers with his wild prognostications. But after Rains is plagued by severe headaches, he discovers that he truly does have "visions". Suddenly his predictions begin to come true, and Rains is elevated to a position of prominence in European social and political circles. Despite the protestations of his loving wife (Fay Wray), Rains becomes intoxicated by his own power, which leads to disaster. Also known as The Evil Mind, The Clairvoyant is an elaborate British-made cautionary fable, with an excellent performance by Claude Rains and a remarkably good one from Fay Wray.Claude Rains gives one of his finest performances ever -- and that's saying a lot. The rest of the cast is also first-rate in this story of a fake fortune-teller who suddenly starts seeing visions of the future for real. I really liked the small touches that director Elvey put in to make you feel as if Claude and his family really were a family -- little things like the way wife Fay Wray will touch his shoulder, the way the family talks on top of one another -- it's all carefully and perfectly done. After several misadventures involving obnoxious children and snooty matrons, Sally finds herself in the middle of a murder scheme. With reluctant boyfriend Humphrey (Eddie Albert) in tow, Sally gets mixed up in one hilariously life-threatening situation after another, culminating in a prolonged chase sequence on board a tramp steamer. Highlights include Ball's outrageous striptease scene (to the tune of Rita Hayworth's "Put the Blame on Mame") and a choice cameo by Red Skelton as an all-too-cooperative customer. The star plays Red Jones, a born screw-up who can't seem to hold down a job. With the help of his ever-loving girlfriend Ann Elliot (Janet Blair), Red gets a job as a Fuller Brush salesman, intending to take the business world by storm with his can't-fail sales techniques. Unfortunately, when Red isn't messing up on his own, he's being sabotaged by his supervisor Keenan Wallick (Don McGuire) — who also happens to be sweet on Ann. While trying to make a sale at the home of Commissioner Trist (Nicholas Joy), poor Red finds himself the Number One Suspect when Trist is murdered. With Ann's help, Red eventually stumbles onto the identity of the actual killer, and the chase is on. And what a chase! Pursued by a battalion of thugs (played by several of Hollywood's top stunt men), Red and Ann hotfoot it through a well-stocked war surplus warehouse, wherein all the props — rubber rafts, prefabricated houses, camouflage tents, flare guns — are utilized to their utmost comic potential. It was successful enough in 1948 to spawn a series of imitations — The Good Humor Man, The Fuller Brush Girl, The Yellow Cab Man, Kill the Umpire - -all of which, like Fuller Brush Man, were co-scripted by the inexhaustibly inventive Frank Tashlin." http://oldtimeentertainment.com/images/uploads/fullerbrush-3.jpg 15.99 http://oldtimeentertainment.com/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=16 "THE GHOST WALKS 1934 John Miljan, June Collyer, Richard Carle,Eve Southern" "The Ghost Walks1934"The Ghost Walks" starts with a writer driving a play producer and his assistant to his home to present a play he has written. Road conditions force them to abandon their plan and to take refuge at a nearby house this dark and stormy night. The Ghost Walks is a nifty little mystery with a great twist, snappy dialog, and best of all a pansy played to the hilt by character actor Johnny Arthur which never demeans or denigrates his character. Mr. Arthur is great in his role of Homer Erskine bringing great comic relief as the secretary of the Broadway producer Herman Wood, played by another great character actor Richard Carle. This film is a must see for devotees of poverty row films, old dark house mysteries (they actually managed to work in the lines "It was a dark and stormy night)...............The actors awaiting them proceed with the play. The obviously gay couple, absorbed with their current predicament, none the wiser. However, the plan soon starts to unravel. It's not really scary by today's standards, but there are some suspenseful moments (well, if you're watching this at 5am or something). The actors are great, the dialogue is fun, there are even quite a few jokes that work well. Homer, the secretary, is by far the best most enjoyable. This is the best 'Old House' mystery I've found so far in a long time. Lots of humor, a fast-enough pace, a homicidal maniac and disappearing actors keep it entertaining. It has all the secret panels in the walls, eyes from behind a picture - some nasty guy watches folks in the den from. People being snatched from beds and closets. All this brings back those beautiful memories of when I was a kid and got the be-geebies scared out of me watching these kinds of shows. The mystery angle of the film is very entertaining, and the twist at the end might just leave you in stitches.Credited cast: John Miljan.... Prescott AmesJune Collyer.... Gloria ShawRichard Carle.... The director was James Cruze of "Covered Wagon" fame. The writer was Ben Hetch associated with many excellent films (Front Page, Underworld, etc). The lead actor, Von Stroheim of legendary achievments. The resulting film is a worthwhile viewing experience.Clunky solid gramophone sound and some sensational Ziegfeld stage numbers make this early talkie musical drama a real treat for viewers of 1929 movies. Vile schizophrenic ventriloquist brute, Von Stroheim, with his very creepy dummy (like the terrifying one in the DEAD OF NIGHT sequence with Michael Redgrave) seem somehow to be the toast of the stage. This 1929 showcase for both the technology of the day and the stage and screen stars rightly celebrated over the period are shown to be both fascinating and versatile as this film progresses.THE GREAT GABBO is an excellent film of its day that rightly and clearly shows the force of Von Stroheim and the expert stage and screen dance entertainment popular in the 20s in the Ziegfeld sequences seemingly filmed right in front of a real stage.Majorie Kane appears and most of the musical numbers are hilariously delightful, crowded with teens leaping about and bumping into each other in a great array of all sorts of fantasy costumes. The silliest and most enjoyable of which is a spider and fly number in which the above quote is hissed during a squabble in between verses.THE GREAT GABBO is a major find for students of 20s art deco, early talkie technology and very strong and effective acting. This film is full of "wow!" scenes. Highly recommended for anyone wanting further insight into the era." http://oldtimeentertainment.com/images/uploads/Great_gabbo.jpg 12.99 http://oldtimeentertainment.com/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=56 "THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME 1932 Joel McCrea,Fay Wray - 1932" "The story begins with an explosion and the sinking of a yacht with Robert Rainsford (Joel McCrea) becoming the sole survivor of the perished crew. He swims to safety on a remote island and soon encounters an ancient mansion where lives the Russian Count Zoroff (Leslie Banks), and his muted servant, Ivan (Noble Johnson) and Tatur (Steve Clemento). After getting into some dry clothes, Rainsford is introduced to Zoroff's other guests, Eve (Fay Wray) and her brother, Martin Trowbridge (Robert Armstrong), also shipwreck survivors.Gathering in the living room, Zoroff discusses his interest in game hunting, but instead of hunting animals, which now bores him, he hunts his new interest - a most dangerous game. Later that night, Zoroff has made the drunken Martin his latest prey, and after returning from his all night hunt, Zoroff shows Eve and Rainsford his trophy room, consisting of human heads and corpses, with Martin's body being among them.Because Rainsford is a noted author and hunter, Zoroff wants him to go game hunting with him, the hunting of man. Refusing to take part in his mad scheme, Rainsford, in turn, becomes Zoroff's next prey. Zoroff promises that if Rainsford eludes him until sunrise, he and Eve are set free, and if he doesn't, gets to recapture Eve alive, since he doesn't hunt the "female animal." Being given a 12 hour head start for preparation, Rainsford, with Eve's help, works against time using his brains instead of his feet to try and outsmart the hunter, but after midnight, the hunt begins, with Zoroff's tracking them down with weapons ranging from bow and arrow, rifle, and, as the last resort, the release of his vicious dogs, climaxed by surprises for both hunter and the hunted.THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME ranks one of the very best stories ever transferred on screen. In spite of alterations to Connell's original story, such as adding a female to accompany Rainsford, this adaptation is a fast-pace 65 minutes that never lets up for a minute. The first half hour devotes itself to character study, with Robert Armstrong's drunken performance somewhat slowing down the pace instead of providing humor. However, second half of the movie is tight on suspense, with the camera capturing every move and reaction from the three central characters, with Max Steiner's underscoring setting the mood and pace. Of course there's plenty of close calls and near misses to add to the excitement, making this a well staged and truly memorable experience after it is all over. What makes THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME worthy is the uncanny performance of British actor Leslie Banks, in his Hollywood debut, hamming it up to perfection, making his insane hunter come to life as intended by the author. Close ups of his eyes during the hunt is truly effective. If the jungle settings look familiar, it's the same set used for the much more famous adventure, KING KONG (RKO, 1933), that also features Fay Wray and Robert Armstrong. While Joel McCrea has been on screen since the silent era, starting from small roles to the elevation of leads, THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME showcases him to best advantage, but cannot take away from the performance of Leslie Banks. While never a high rank leading man, McCrea did become a Hollywood survivor, better known for westerns, retiring from his successful career by 1962.Credited cast: Joel McCrea....
